About the Role
Strong financial governance underpins Opportune’s ability to operate responsibly and grow sustainably. As Director of Finance, you will lead the organisation’s financial management, accounting oversight, and compliance functions, ensuring Opportune remains financially sound, transparent, and well-governed.
This is a senior volunteer leadership role with responsibility for financial strategy, reporting, and compliance within a proprietary limited company. You will work closely with the Executive Director and leadership team to guide budgeting, forecasting, risk management, and long-term sustainability.
While this role carries significant responsibility and trust, it does not include unilateral authority to bind the Company or approve expenditure beyond agreed limits. This role suits people able to make a meaningful contribution over time, without fixed weekly hour requirements.

Financial Management and Strategy
Develop and manage budgets, forecasts, and cash flow reports
Monitor and report on the Company’s financial position and performance
Advise on sustainability strategies, including revenue models, cost controls, and long-term financial planning appropriate to a proprietary limited company
Accounting and Record-Keeping
Oversee and ensure the accuracy of financial records and bookkeeping systems, whether managed directly or through delegated support or external providers
Prepare and reconcile core financial statements, including profit and loss, balance sheet, and cash flow reports
Oversee tracking and reporting of restricted or program-specific expenditure where applicable
Tax, Regulatory, and Corporate Compliance
Ensure compliance with all applicable Australian corporate, taxation, and reporting obligations
Oversee GST, BAS, ASIC filings, and other statutory requirements relevant to a proprietary limited company
Coordinate end-of-financial-year reporting and support audits or reviews where required
Monitor changes to relevant tax and reporting regulations and advise on implications
Governance, Risk, and Internal Controls
Support transparent decision-making and financial risk management
Contribute to the development and maintenance of internal controls, financial policies, and compliance frameworks
Provide financial insight to support organisational planning and governance discussions
Collaboration and Advisory Support
Work closely with the Executive Director and leadership team to inform strategic decision-making
Provide clear, timely financial advice to support responsible growth and operational sustainability
What We’re Looking For
Strong interest in purpose-driven work and youth access to opportunity
Excellent numeracy, organisation, and attention to detail
Ability to handle sensitive financial information with discretion and integrity
Proactive, reliable, and comfortable working autonomously
Experience in finance, accounting, governance, or compliance is welcomed but not essential
