    About the Role

    Our ability to connect young people with life-changing opportunities depends on strong, transparent, and sustainable financial management. As Director of Finance, you’ll lead all aspects of Opportune’s finance, accounting, and compliance, ensuring we remain financially healthy, fully compliant, and ready to grow.

    You’ll work closely with the Executive Director and leadership team, guiding financial strategy, overseeing governance processes, and ensuring all reporting, tax, and compliance requirements are met.

    This is a volunteer leadership role, offering the chance to shape the financial foundations of a national, youth-led initiative making real impact.

    Location: Remote (Australia-based preferred)
    Time Commitment: 10–15 hours/week, flexible
    Reporting to: Executive Director
    Status: Not currently recruiting but expressions of interest welcome

    Key Responsibilities

    Financial Management & Strategy

    • Develop and manage budgets, forecasts, and cash flow reports

    • Monitor and report on Opportune’s financial health to the leadership team

    • Advise on sustainability strategies and funding priorities

    Accounting & Record-Keeping

    • Maintain accurate financial records and bookkeeping systems

    • Prepare and reconcile financial statements (Balance Sheet, P&L, Cash Flow)

    • Manage grant expenditure tracking and acquittals

    Tax & Compliance

    • Ensure compliance with all relevant not-for-profit obligations

    • Manage TFN, and other tax registrations

    • Prepare and lodge BAS and other required returns on time

    • Oversee end-of-financial-year reporting and audits

    • Stay across changes to relevant tax and reporting regulations

    Governance

    • Support transparent decision-making and risk management

    • Contribute to organisational policies relating to finance and compliance

    What We’re Looking For

    • Passion for youth empowerment and purpose-driven work

    • Strong numeracy, organisational skills, and attention to detail

    • Ability to manage sensitive information with discretion

    • Proactive and self-directed work style

    • Experience in finance, accounting, governance, or not-for-profit compliance (welcome but not essential)
